Addiction and Gender
Prof. Michelle McClellan (IRWG, History, and Residential College)
IRWG’s Program on Addiction and Gender aims to catalyze new collaborations among scholars from across the disciplines—including the social, biological and health sciences, and the humanities—who are interested in the intersections of gender identity; sexuality; social status; and all forms of substance use, misuse, and abuse. We consider these issues from a range of perspectives—including historical and cultural contexts, biological and social variables, and public policy implications.
The program includes a speaker series and forums, including breakfast meetings and a writing group, to facilitate collaboration. A further goal is to document the contributions of pioneering scholars who conducted early research on female addicts and on the gendered dimensions of substance use and abuse.
A mini-conference on Addiction and Gender is planned for the 2011-12 academic year. For more information, contact Prof. Michelle McClellan.
