In the Winter 2009 semester, Lane Hall hosts In Times of War: In Her Own Words, an exhibit curated by the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI (courtesy of the Arab American National Museum; www.arabamericanmuseum.org). This exhibit has served as a mentoring project between university professors, local Arab American women and fifteen students, some from U-M. Initially, students met with local university professors to learn about the methodology for conducting oral histories. After a series of lectures, the students paired off and met with nine area Arab American women whose lives have been affected by the threat of conflict.
In conjunction with this exhibit, on January 21 at noon, Anan Ameri, Director of the Arab American Museum, kicks off a semester-long series, Arab Women: Transnational Perspectives. Ameri will discuss how the exhibit came to be and what its impact has been.
The series also includes:
February 19, 3:00 p.m. - Frances Hasso (Oberlin), “Sexuality, Marriage, and 'Family Crisis' in the Middle East and North Africa”.
March 12, 12:00 p.m. - Sofia Merajver (U-M), "Breast Cancer Research in North Africa: Adventures of an Argentinean American Physician Scientist in a Wonderful Land".
April 9, 4:00 p.m. - Zeina Zaatari (Global Fund for Women).
All of the talks will take place in 2239 Lane Hall. The art exhibit will be on display in Lane Hall through July 31, 2009 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
